Kick the Habit

Nicotine patches are now available on the PBS

From the 1st of February, smokers (general and concession card patients) have access to nicotine patches under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) as a part of a quit smoking initiative by the Federal Government.

The supply of nicotine patches on the PBS requires a prescription from a medical practitioner or authorised nurse practitioner. The nicotine patches will be available as a 12 week supply in each year. The patches are available in two levels: one which releases 21mg of nicotine over 24 hours and one which releases 15mg of nicotine over 16 hours.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon says smoking kills 15,000 Australians and costs the economy $31.5 Billion. “There are many serious health consequences for smoking and we want to provide support to smokers who are ready to kick the habit” she said.

For help to quit smoking, people should consult their doctor or pharmacist, call Quitline on 137848, or go to the Quitline website www.quitnow.info.au.
