GU Health investigated the causes and effects of work‑related stress ‑ and how well we're coping. The study produced some very interesting findings, some highlights include:
Stress is an inevitable part of work life for most
Nearly 4 in 5 people (78%) get stressed at work at least once a week, and for many, it's more often.
Work stress has a major effect on personal lives
83% identified stress as having a moderate, high or massive effect on their personal lives.
Working late is the most common means of dealing with stress‑related fears
44% of people cite working late as how they address the issue of work‑related stress.
Most people would like to exercise more often
Over 75% would like to exercise every day or most days. This compares with only 26.5% who actually do exercise this regularly
Technology that was supposed to help is making things worse
Two in three people (65%) agree or strongly agree that modern technology/communications make it even harder to switch off and achieve a balance between work and home life.
Very few people feel they have got the balance right
Only 6% of people feel that their life is balanced the way they want it.
Health funds can play a more active role in people's health and wellbeing
A statement that almost 80% of respondents agree with.
Stress is not always being left behind at work
28% find it quite difficult or very difficult to switch off when they get home.
